Product description
The panagia "The Savior on the Throne" depicts an iconographic image of Christ the Almighty sitting on the throne. The origins of the central image lie in the Holy Scriptures, where it is said that Christ will sit as the King of Heaven and Judge on the throne prepared on the day of the Second Coming.
The image of the "Savior on the Throne" was laid down in the early centuries under the influence of the canons of the image of the Roman emperors. In Byzantine art, he was called "Pantokrator," which means "the Almighty."
On the icon, the image of the seated Christ is distinguished by Its triumphal appearance, It wears royal robes ― a chiton and a himatium fastened with a brooch, a fibula, and sandaled feet on a carved base. The solemn throne is lavishly decorated with rich carvings, pearl trim, and a cushion with tassels. The image is complemented by the attributes of monarchical power: the head is crowned with a crown, in the hands of a golden orb and a scepter with crosses in the pommels. The ball-shaped power is a symbol of dominion over the earth, and the prototype of the scepter is a shepherd's crook.
Around the Savior's head is a baptised halo with the Greek letters O (omicron), W (omega) and N (nu), forming the word I Am, and indicating one of God's names (Exodus 3:14). Along the edges of the icon, the letters IC XC are an abbreviated spelling of the name of Christ in Greek.
The iconographic image of the Savior on the Throne is placed in a gilded frame made of lush carved leaves. The background is decorated with fine texture, imitating the ancient kanfaring technique.
The miniature icon has the shape of an egg, symbolizing the Resurrection of Christ. The image of the egg is associated with the legend of Mary Magdalene, who went to the Roman Emperor Tiberius to announce the Resurrection of the Savior, presenting him with an egg as a symbol of the rebirth of life. The tradition of giving Easter eggs is connected with the same legend.
On the reverse side of the product is the 90th Psalm and the Lord's prayer. On the end of the product are the words from the 5th prayer of St. Basil the Great.
The panagia is crowned with a buttonhole in the form of a royal crown with a cross – a symbol of supreme power and righteousness.
At the bottom of the product is a movable suspension ― a bunch of grapes. Since ancient times, grapes have been considered the evangelical image of Christ, the source of life, which he gives through Communion. The symbol of the vine has the meaning of the Church, where the branches are members of the Church, and the grapes are a symbol of Holy Communion.
The panagia is mounted on a miniature pedestal. The domed pedestal is decorated with a pearl rim and twisted plaits, and at the top a lush bouquet of carved leaves holds a precious pendant and represents a piece of jewelry in the interior.
