The Holy Martyr Eugene of Trebizond, along with other martyrs Candide, Valerian and Aquila, suffered for his faith in Christ during the reign of Diocletian and Maximian from the ruler Lysias. Valerian, Candide, and Aquila were captured in the mountains of Trebizond, because with the onset of severe persecution they left their homes, all their possessions, and the whole vain world and wandered in the mountains, preferring to live with animals rather than with God-defying idolaters. The captured three martyrs were sent to the city of Pina in the Lassian country to severe imprisonment, and then brought to Trebizond and presented to the ruler of Lysias. When the saints, questioned about the faith of Christ and encouraged to sacrifice idols, disobeyed, they were first beaten naked with veins, and then hanged and whittled with iron claws, scorching them with burning candles. The holy sufferers were strengthened by the Divine power that invisibly dwelt in them amidst their torments. She suddenly terrified the tormentors so much that they prostrated themselves as if they were dead. Seeing this, Lysias was horrified and ordered the martyrs to be taken to prison. A few days later, Eugene was captured and severely beaten for confessing the name of Jesus Christ. When the ruler went to the idol temple, behind which the martyr Eugene was being led, at Eugene's prayer the idols fell and crumbled to dust. Then the hands and feet of the martyr were tied with ropes and, stretching him on the ground, they beat him. After much suffering, all four holy martyrs were thrown into a fiery furnace together, and when they emerged from there without harm to themselves, they were beheaded with a sword.
Through the prayer of St. Eugene performed miracles. The most numerous miracles are where the saint acts as a defender of monastic interests, monitors the safety of property and cares for the prosperity of the monastery, often the saint acts as a healer, giving advice to the suffering, providing moral support.
